Stop smoking or vaping with hypnotherapy: how my programme works

Stopping smoking or vaping takes more than one magical meeting. Here is how my short programme works, what hypnosis feels like and the free follow up meeting available for a year afterwards.

You already know smoking is expensive and bad for you. The packet has been telling you for years. More information is rarely the missing piece. The difficult part is the moment your hand reaches for a cigarette before the sensible argument has finished.

Hypnotherapy can help with that automatic pattern, whether you smoke or vape. You do not see me for one magical meeting. We work together over a short programme of meetings to understand what the habit does for you, when the urge fires and what needs to change in real life.

Why smoking survives good intentions

Smoking is chemical and learned. Nicotine creates dependence. Repetition builds a chain around it: coffee, hand to pocket, lighter, first drag, exhale, pause. Stress, driving, alcohol, meals and other smokers become cues.

However you choose to handle the nicotine side of it, the learned chain can still surprise you. People sometimes feel very little physical craving and still find themselves standing outside, because the situation finished the habit for them.

  • The first cigarette with coffee.
  • The break that gets you away from work.
  • The one after food.
  • The cigarette that fills waiting time.
  • The shared smoke with somebody else.
  • The belief that it calms stress.

Does hypnotherapy work for smoking?

It can help some people stop, especially when they genuinely want to stop and the work addresses their actual triggers. No approach works for everybody, which is why I work with you over a short programme and include one free follow up meeting for a year afterwards.

Research on smoking hypnotherapy is mixed. That matters. Be wary of anybody selling a guaranteed cure from one meeting. My approach gives us time to work on your triggers and see how the change holds in everyday situations.

The meetings are where we work on the pattern. Your ordinary day is where you discover what has changed.

What happens before hypnosis

I ask about more than the number. When did it start? Which cigarettes feel essential? What have you tried? What happened on the day you restarted? What does smoking give you that you're worried about losing?

The answers matter because "I smoke twenty a day" describes quantity, not function. One person uses cigarettes to create breaks. Another uses them to manage anger. Another barely notices smoking until alcohol is involved. Vaping can have its own patterns, too. A generic script treats those as the same problem.

What hypnosis feels like

You sit comfortably and listen. I guide your attention and imagination. You remain aware of the room and can speak. Some people feel heavy, light or deeply relaxed. Others feel ordinary. There's no correct sensation and no moment where I take control.

We work with the associations around smoking and with the version of you who no longer needs the cigarette to perform those jobs. The details depend on what came out of the conversation. I don't read the same stop-smoking script to everybody.

Will you make cigarettes disgusting?

Some approaches rely on aversion. I am more interested in removing the value and pull of the cigarette than building another anxious reaction around it. You already know smoke smells and tastes unpleasant when you aren't caught in the habit. The problem is that the expected relief can matter more in the moment.

What happens during the programme

Across the meetings, we look at the situations that set off the habit and work on the response. Then real life gives you a chance to test it. Coffee happens. Somebody annoys you. You drive the usual route. We use what happens between meetings to focus the next one on what still needs attention.

When you are ready to stop, clear away cigarettes or vapes and the things that keep the routine going. Clean the car. Wash the coat. Avoid keeping an "emergency" supply. It keeps the old option close at hand.

The stop smoking page explains the programme. The consultation is a separate meeting where we work out whether I think I can help and whether you want to continue. Book your consultation.

Who is a poor fit?

If you don't want to stop and somebody else has sent you, the work is unlikely to hold. If you want permission for one cigarette at weekends, be honest about that. If you expect hypnosis to remove every uncomfortable moment while you keep the same routines and social cues, expectations need correcting.

What if you have tried before?

A previous relapse doesn't mean you can't stop. It tells you where the old plan had a gap. Maybe alcohol removed the pause. Maybe stress returned and cigarettes were still your only break. Maybe the first practitioner treated smoking as one habit rather than your habit.

  • Identify the exact restart, including the trigger.
  • Plan for alcohol and other smokers.
  • Replace the break, not merely the cigarette.
  • Use nicotine support if it suits you.
  • Ask for help before one cigarette becomes a packet.

What if the habit returns?

If you choose to go back to smoking or vaping within a year of completing the programme, get in touch. Your programme includes one free follow up meeting during that year. We can look at what happened and work on the pattern that brought you back to it.

The useful question is: "What did the cigarette or vape appear to solve, and what needs changing before the same moment returns?"

Prepare the first week

Tell the people you usually smoke with. Change the coffee routine for a few days. Carry something simple for your hands and mouth if that helps. Plan short walks or genuine breaks at the times you would normally go outside. Keep alcohol low if it has led to restarts before.

Don't fill every minute to avoid thinking about cigarettes. That turns the thought into something dangerous. Let it appear, name it as an old cue and return to what you chose. An urge can be uncomfortable without becoming an instruction.

If you're done managing it

Bring the cigarettes or vapes you rely on, the ones you barely notice and the attempts that did not last. In the separate consultation, we will decide whether I think I can help and whether you want to continue with the programme. If I do not think I can help, I will tell you. Book your consultation.
